Southern Cameroon Activist Abdul Karim Ali Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Abdul Karim Ali, a prominent peace activist from Southern Cameroon, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia by a military court in Cameroon. This ruling was announced on April 16, 2025, amidst ongoing tensions related to the Anglophone crisis in the country.

Ali has been a vocal critic of the Cameroonian government, particularly regarding human rights abuses. He was arbitrarily detained on August 11, 2022, and has faced repeated interrogations about a video he released in July 2022, which condemned a military chief for allegedly torturing civilians. His detention has been characterized by human rights organizations as arbitrary, with calls for his release due to the lack of formal charges against him.

Abdul Karim Ali faced serious charges that included acts of terrorismfinancing terrorism, and secession. These charges are commonly levied against activists in Cameroon, particularly those associated with the Anglophone crisis, where individuals advocating for the rights of the English-speaking population often find themselves targeted by the government for their political activities and expressions of dissent

The military tribunal's decision to sentence Ali in absentia raises significant concerns about the fairness of the trial process. Ali has not been present in court, and the military court's jurisdiction over civilians has been widely criticized. This case is part of a broader pattern of repression against activists in Cameroon, particularly those advocating for the rights of the Anglophone population, which has been embroiled in conflict with the government since 2016.

The life imprisonment sentence is expected to exacerbate tensions in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. It reflects the government's ongoing crackdown on dissent and raises serious questions about the rule of law and human rights in the country. Activists and human rights organizations are likely to continue advocating for Ali's release and for broader reforms to ensure fair trials and the protection of civil liberties in Cameroon.
