The Appointment
The announcement came through a decree issued on November 17, 2025, in which Tchiroma refers to himself as "President-elect of the Republic of Cameroon." In her new capacity, Nkom will speak on behalf of Tchiroma, represent his positions across institutional, diplomatic, and media platforms, and coordinate all communications related to his political activities.
Who is Alice Nkom?
Alice Nkom is no ordinary political figure. She made history as Cameroon's first Black French-speaking woman admitted to the bar and currently serves as president of the Central African Human Rights Defenders Network (Redhac). Her reputation as a fearless advocate for human rights and defender of marginalized communities has earned her international recognition.
The Electoral Dispute
This appointment takes place against the backdrop of a contested presidential election held in October 2025. While official results proclaimed by the Constitutional Council declared Paul Biya the winner, securing his eighth term in office, Tchiroma has rejected these results and established what he calls a parallel "Presidency Elect" structure.
During the campaign, Nkom had publicly endorsed Tchiroma's candidacy. She stated that according to observers' assessments, Tchiroma should have been declared president with 70% of the vote.
What This Means
The appointment signals Tchiroma's determination to maintain his challenge to the official electoral results. By choosing a figure of Nkom's stature and credibility, he appears to be positioning his opposition movement for sustained political engagement in the months ahead.
As Cameroon navigates this period of political tension, all eyes will be on how this appointment shapes the ongoing dialogue between the opposition and established authorities.
